DEPARTMENT: Environment and Remedial Works

SALARY GRADE 3: (Min. $39,009.00- Max. $58,514.00)

STATUS: Permanent

Core Functions
The Wildlife Technician will assist and provide support with the implementation of the Hunting, Fishing and Trapping Regime as per section 24 of the JBNQA and address various wildlife matters in the James Bay Territory, with the ultimate objective of ensuring the health of wildlife populations and respect of Cree rights and interest. More specifically, the Wildlife Technician will assist with the research projects, wildlife surveys, and any monitoring, data collection and analysis required for the preservation of wildlife populations and habitats in Eeyou Istchee.

Functional Responsibilities:
 Collect and monitor wildlife and habitat information
 Conduct and participate in wildlife surveys or research projects in collaboration with communities, CTA, other
governmental and non-governmental organizations
 Conduct necessary field work to document wildlife issues resulting from impacts of development projects
 Participate in the management of Cree harvesting information
 Compile and maintain wildlife information and databases
 Conduct the necessary Geographical Information mapping and analysis work to monitor wildlife and its habitats
 Participate in developing and conducting wildlife awareness and education programs
 Assist in writing reports as required
 Provide advice and support to other Cree Nation Government staff involved in wildlife matters
 Provide assistance to the Cree Trappers Association, Cree local governments and agencies in the conduct of wildlife
assessment projects, surveys design, etc.
 Assist in conducting scientific reviews on various wildlife subjects as required and assess wildlife population levels
based on the best information available
 Assist the Wildlife staff in the planning of goals, actions to be taken and execution of the work required to address
wildlife matters
 Perform other related tasks as requested by the Director and/or the Wildlife Administrator

Requirements Education and Certification:
 College Diploma in Wildlife Technician Program or related studies
 One to three years of relevant work experience

 Verbal Fluency in Cree
 Fluency in English
 Fluency in French is an asset
Knowledge and Abilities:
 Good communications and interpersonal skills
 Good Knowledge of Survey Design Methods
 Strong administrative skills and report writing
 Strong organizational skills and ability to coordinate multiple tasks and respect deadlines  Good judgment and problem solving skills
 Ability to work independently and in a team environment
 Good Knowledge of computer software (Word, Access, Excel), and analytical tools in Arc GIS]
Additional Requirements
 Willingness to travel frequently  Must hold a valid driver’s license
